At Moorthorpe, D&T will allow us to take practical ownership of our world.
Our D&T curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils will:
- Encounter a broad range of practical experiences.
- Solve real and relevant problems within a variety of different contexts.
- Appreciate the iterative process of designing and making products.
- Develop critical evaluation skills.
- Recognise and discuss the key events and individuals who helped shape the world today.
- Apply a ‘reflect, evaluate and improve’ mindset in D&T and the wider curriculum.
- Be equipped with the practical skills they need to make and amend their own products in the future
- Show awareness of the food they eat with regards to where it comes from, how it is made and the impact it has on their health and the environment.
"At Moorthorpe, our design and technology curriculum inspires children to be curious, creative and confident designers and makers. Through purposeful designing and making activities, pupils develop their creativity while learning how to turn ideas into practical products. They are taught to blend design skills with technical knowledge and understanding which enables them to think carefully about how and why products are made.
Skills and knowledge are carefully sequenced and built upon year by year, ensuring that all children can practise, refine and progress as they move through the school. Evaluation is central to the design process and encourages pupils to reflect on their work, make improvements and take pride in refining their ideas which we believe is an important life skill that supports resilience and problem-solving.
Design and technology provides meaningful opportunities for children to apply learning from other subjects, particularly mathematics, science and art, helping them to see clear connections across the curriculum. Our approach is rooted in our school vision, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, is encouraged to flourish and become the very best version of themselves. We follow the National Curriculum for design and technology, underpinned by a clear and ambitious progression of skills and knowledge."
