Maths Subject Leader: Mrs Field
At Moorthorpe our vision for Maths is that all pupils will:
- Be fluent, reliable mathematicians
- Display genuine and deep understanding by exploring concepts using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches
- Articulate and represent reasoning using the language of mathematics
- Be skilled problems solvers, consciously applying a range of logical and systematic strategies
- Be adept at distinguishing between using the relevant mental and written procedures
- Show rapid recall of number facts rooted in secure understanding
- Make links and connections across mathematical domains and apply skills throughout the wider curriculum
- Show resilience, perseverance and independent thought

NCETM
Our primary planning tool and long term plan is based upon the Curriculum Prioritisation materials provided by the NCETM.
We are supported by Yorkshire & Humber Maths Hub as part of our journey into teaching for mastery throughout school. This enables us to be continually be up to date with current thinking about best practice and effective pedagogy.
This NCETM programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to the end of Key Stage Two.
Early Years
We use the Master the Curriculum resources and planning framework which align and can be used alongside the Oak Academy materials.
The EYFS learning environment is planned with a clear mathematical focus and purpose to the areas. Daily routines ensure children’s number sense is developed for example with the use of ten frames to show ‘who is here today’ alongside Numicon plates.
In nursery the maths area focuses on securing children’s subitising skills to 5 with lots of reinforcement throughout the setting through the use of rhymes. This is extended to 10 in reception. We focus on developing children’s vocabulary development – this includes correct mathematical language.
Multiplication Tables
We have adopted the Claire Christie approach across KS2. This is proving highly effective as Y4 MTC results have been above National figures for the last three years.
