Overview
The provision and learners are an integral part of the mainstream school community. Specialist support staff work alongside mainstream staff to ensure that where possible pupils are able to access quality first teaching in the mainstream classroom learning environment for up to 80% of the day. This is achieved by ensuring learners receive the right level of support while developing their independence, confidence and sense of belonging. Through personalised learning, targeted interventions and specialist support, we aim to remove barriers to learning and enable every child to participate in school life.
Curriculum
Pupils access a broad and balanced, adapted curriculum which follows the key elements of mainstream school, with a strong emphasis on social communication and emotional regulation. The curriculum is flexible and responsive to the needs of each child. The amount of time pupils spend within the mainstream classrooms and accessing specialist interventions may vary according to their individual needs, developmental stage and readiness to learn.
Timetables are reviewed regularly and may be adapted to provide additional opportunities for targeted support, communication and interaction, sensory regulation, life skills, social development or other areas identified within a pupil's individual provision. This flexible approach enables pupils to access learning at a pace and level that is appropriate for them, while promoting inclusion, independence, confidence and progress.
Interventions & Strategies
Pupils are supported to develop an understanding of their emotions, recognise their individual sensory needs and develop strategies to regulate themselves. Specialist staff provide consistent routines, clear expectations and supportive relationships, alongside access to appropriate sensory resources, movement breaks, quiet spaces and regulation activities where required.
Provision is adapted according to individual needs and may include personalised sensory diets, structured regulation breaks, visual supports, reduced sensory demands and access to a calm, low-arousal environment. Staff work closely with families and relevant professionals to understand each pupil's needs and ensure that strategies are consistent and effective.
Admissions
Admissions to the Inclusion Resource are managed via Wakefield Local Authority, Special Educational Needs Assessment Review Team in consultation with Moorthorpe Primary School and WISENDSS management team. Visits to the Inclusion Resource are welcome and can be arranged by contacting the school to arrange an appointment.
